Escape From Tomorrow (2013)

Escape From Tomorrow - 2013 - film poster

Yeah yeah yeah. I know, it’s not technically a new release, or a movie from my collection. However, I did just recently watch this one, and really felt like sharing my thoughts on this pretentious mess. So, here’s Escape From Tomorrow :

In a world of fake castles and anthropomorphic rodents, an epic battle begins when an unemployed father’s sanity is challenged by a chance encounter with two underage girls on holiday.

So, first off, everyone who knows about this movie knows the story. It was filmed primarily in Disney Land and Disney World, with exactly 0% permission. Making it a pretty interesting exercise in guerrilla film making. It also allows for the movie to have some pretty striking visuals, and a pretty surreal look. Given that the Disney parks are already so other-worldly, and as a result the movie looks pretty interesting. Sometimes. Other times it’s clearly weird (and terrible) green screening, and eventually it does sort of dissolve into a mess.

The characters are not likable, and border on irritating most of the time, and spending time with the father while he follows these underage girls around the park like a predator, eventually becomes very tedious. There are some sort of interesting and creepy visuals in the movie, but they are few and far between and never seem to mean anything at all. By the time the movie ends you’re still not totally sure what was happening, and it’s clear that there is an attempt here to emulate David Lynch style story telling.

The thing is, just because you don’t explain something to the audience doesn’t make you David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick. It makes you a pretentious dick with a pretentious art movie. The potential here was really high and it really could have been something interesting. Unfortunately, the most interesting part (at least for me) was the fact that they actually were in Disney Land, and the movie still some how managed to come out. You can look up how, something about Fair Use, and whatever.

Anyways, the movie is a bloated, pretentious mess and really didn’t do anything for me. So, that’s my piece on this movie.
