The Terror (1963)

Alright, carrying right along with the ‘movies I own but haven’t seen yet’ series, this one also comes from the FRIGHTFEST box, as you can see from the picture above. So, this one is called The Terror, and is directed by George Corman, and also features some second unit direction by Mr. Francis Ford Coppola. So, what’s this one about? Well :

A young officer in Napoleon’s army pursues a mysterious woman to the castle of an elderly Baron.

Pretty simple, right?

So, this one actually stars a couple of film icons, and that was one of the more exciting things about this movie. We have the man himself, Mr. Boris Karloff the man who played both Frankenstein AND The Mummy and is a horror ICON, without any dispute. As well, we have a wet-behind-the-ears, 26(ish) year old Jack Nicholson. He’s not quite the ham, nor the charisma machine that we know him to be all these years later, but it’s always fun to see the early years of the biggest actors.

Star power aside, this movie was actually pretty boring. It’s only 81 minutes, but does feel so much longer. Quite a lot of time is spent being strange to Nicholson’s character, and creeping around an old castle for extended periods of time. I really did want to enjoy the movie, and some of the art work in the opening credits is very creepy any bizarre. The story is interesting, but it’s just no executed in a way that is incredibly fun to watch.

That being said, there is a scene in the beginning of the film in which Jack Nicholson has a fist fight, in the ocean, with a hawk. It’s genuinely fantastic and bizarre and made the movie worth watching as far as I’m concerned. Though, it doesn’t stay that crazy from there on.

The sets are beautiful, the acting is fine, and the movie is capably shot, it’s just really not very engaging and feels like kind of a slog to get through. Of course, that’s just one guy’s opinion. This could be your FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALLLLLL TIME. I think what I had hoped for, with a title like The Terror, was some good old fashioned cheese, and that’s just not what I got.

That’s really all I have to say about this one, it shows its age and just wasn’t a ton of fun to watch, nor was it especially scary. So, that’s all I’ve got for you on THE TERROR.
