I absolutely adore this movie.
That’s the first thing I needed to say about it, I saw this and The Conjuring in theaters on the same day, and instantly was in love with this movie. So lets not waste any time. Here is some plot for the movie “You’re Next” :
When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.
Now, this sounds a whole lot like your standard “home invasion” fare, that is easily lumped in with movies like The Strangers, or Funny Games. However, this is just so completely not what you think it’s going to be.
First off , the biggest surprise that this movie gave me was it’s enormous sense of fun. The characters are over-the-top and very engaging right from the get go, and this bickering family is somehow very unlikable and extremely endearing all at the same time. It certainly helps you not get overly attached to anyone when the .. arrows start flying. The turn where we find out that this new girlfriend is a bad-ass survivalist is also absolutely fantastic.
All of the performances in the movie are solid, fun, and over the top. The violence is pretty graphic, but at the same time stylized and fun. If you are super sensitive to gore, or violence, it’s probably not a movie that you want to put on. It’s not at the same level as Saw or Hostel, but it’s still pretty grim in terms of what you see.
That being said, this movie deserves your attention.
There’s just such a real sense of fun with this movie, which I know is something I have said already, but its so true. It set up this expectation, at least for me, that it was going to be another clone of The Strangers, and delivered a quick, violent, funny, and over the top movie that I just never expected. I was singing this movie’s praises the whole way out of the theater. Even little details, that the first time you actually see the title of the movie is written in blood on a mirror, really stuck with me and just made it that much more interesting an experience.
This is another example of what small, low-budget horror movies CAN BE. They don’t have to be unwatchable student films. The movie was made for only a million dollars. Which, I know, is a lot of money, but in the grand scheme, this is not a movie that had a bunch of money to throw around. It all takes place in this huge house, and once the ride starts, you’re on it until it’s over.
The director of this movie is also responsible for a movie called A Horrible Way To Die, which I will now be checking out, as well as a segment on V/H/S and it’s sequel. There is also a great small performance from one of my favorite modern horror directors, Ti West (The Innkeepers , House Of The Devil), and truthfully I didn’t recognize any of the other actors.
I know I haven’t said a ton about the twists and turns the movie takes, and I really don’t want to. I am wholeheartedly recommending this movie. It’s intense, it’s fast, it’s fun and its violent. One of the few movies like it that I would call a good Date Movie also. It keeps you engaged, and it moves along really quickly.
Don’t miss out on this movie, especially because you think it’s going to be The Strangers all over again. Turn off the lights, get some friends together, and have a great fucking time. That’s what horror is all about : the fun of it.
This won’t disappoint, and is easily one of my favorite movies of 2013, if not of all time.
Final Grade : A-
