A movie from my homeland, and a very dear one to my heart. This time you guys, it’s Cube.
7 complete strangers of widely varying personality characteristics are involuntarily placed in an endless kafkaesque maze containing deadly traps.
This is one of those movies that i just love. There’s something about movies like this one, when done well, that really do it for me. We’ve seen it countless times now, with movies like Saw, Exam and Unknown, and it’s been done to varying degrees of quality.
This is definitely a strong entry.
Made on a shoestring budget, and on an extremely small set. The entire movie was filmed on a 14’x14’ set that was made to look like different cubes by lighting it differently.
It’s one of those rare examples of what you can do when you have a great idea, and the creativity to make it work even when your resources are limited.
Now, admittedly some of the actors in the movie fall a little bit flat, but honestly I don’t really hold it against any of them. The pull out passable performances, and I don’t have much trouble believing any of their responses given their individual personalities and the situation they find themselves in.
The story is clever, and keeps you engaged, and frankly the movie is just great. A really entertaining movie, and a great example to set for independent film makers of what is possible. Arguably, young film makers should be able to pull off even more with the strides in technology we’ve made in the 17 years (holy shit…) since this movie came out.
Besides being at times a bit melodramatic, I don’t have a whole lot of bad things to say about this movie. I really don’t. I think you should watch it if you haven’t already, and I think you’ll likely have a grand time doing so.
Beware the other two in the Cube saga. There is a sequel, Cube 2 : Hypercube which is dumb, and at times borders on being too clever for its own good. To the point where it becomes incomprehensible. Then there is the prequel : Cube Zero, and that one is also dumb. I watched them both before writing this, and honestly, neither of them are quite as much fun as the original.
So, all that said, Cube one is awesome, the other two are stupid. The twist of Cube Zero is also stupid.
Final Rating : B
