This is one of those movies that I really look forward to revisiting during the coarse of this little.. project, and will probably be the easiest review to write. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love this movie?
So, for the uninitiated here is the IMDB synopsis :
A wealthy New York investment banking executive hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he escalates deeper into his illogical, gratuitous fantasies.
I won’t go much farther into the plot than that, as I mentioned in the last review. This is one of those movies that works best if you’re just along for the ride.
First off, the performances. Fantastic. All around. Christian Bale in one of his much earlier roles plays Bateman just beautifully. His performance is darkly funny, and you sure take the bizarre trip down the rabbit hole with him. Everyone else in the movie has rather small roles really, a large and great supporting cast including Willem Dafoe, Reese Witherspoon, Chloe Sevigny and and extremely funny and underrated performance from Jared Leto.
The movie is dark, twisted, graphic, and … interestingly enough, hilarious. It’s based on the, if possible, even more disturbing novel by Bret Easton Ellis (which I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who reads, seriously, it’s a great and really disturbing book).
What else is there really to say about this? If you’ve seen it, you know how good it is, if you haven’t, then you need to know how good it is. If you like Phil Collins, Hewey Lewis & The News, and horrible murders, you really can’t go wrong.
I will say that there are a whole lot of arguments, theories and ideas about how this movie ends…some people love it, some people hate it. Honestly, it works for me. If open endings give you heart palpitations, then skip this movie.
Anyways, it’s a dark, horror, satire, mind-fuck and it needs to be seen. This one gets added to the list of classics, at least my list of classics.
Maybe I should start making a list of classics…
Final Grade : A
FINAL NOTE :
There is a sequel to this movie with Mila Kunis and.. -sigh- William Shatner. Don’t watch it, not even as a funny little joke. Kunis MURDERS Patrick Bateman at the beginning of the movie, and starts her own stupid story. The script wasn’t even intended to be a sequel to American Psycho, it was stapled on the beginning after the success of this one. So fuck that movie, in the face.
Thanks for reading guys, I have to go and return some video tapes.
